Our Team

We recognise that there are two significant parts to the marine stinger problem: the jellyfish, and "the other 90%"... public perception. We help you manage both with an accurate and balanced approach. Our staff have more than 50 years of combined marine stinger management experience.

Dr. Lisa-ann Gershwin

Research Scientist and Jellyfish Specialist

 

Lisa has more than 25 years experience researching jellyfish of all kinds, with particular focus on Irukandjis and Box jellies. She has more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, two best-selling books, two TEDx talks, a smartphone app ("The Jellyfish App"), more than 200 new species discovered (including 16 that are highly dangerous to humans), and a large number of media and speaking appearances. Lisa was the National Marine Stinger Advisor for four years, was on the St John Medical Advisory Panel for seven years, and was a founding member of the Whitsundays Marine Stinger Management Committee.

Deb Lewis

Tourism Development and Training Specialist

Deb has worked with the Queensland tourism industry since 1998 and has been directly involved in projects that have lifted standards in sustainable management of small to medium businesses across the sector. She has worked with Great Barrier Reef marine park tourism operators to ensure protection and preservation of the Great Barrier Reef and its marine ecosystems and wildlife, and as an Independent Auditor for Ecotourism Australia. Deb has a personal commitment to facilitate practices that continually raise the benchmark of responsible and sustainable tourism. She was a founding member of the Whitsundays Marine Stinger Management Committee, which developed and implemented a Safety Management Model that was taken up in regions internationally. She has also been a QLD and regional tourism awards judge for a combined total of 14 years.

Puk & Ashley Scivyer

Sunshine Coast / Fraser Island

 

Puk and Ash run the global aquarium construction business, Australian Aquatica, which is based in Southeast Queensland on the Sunshine Coast. Puk and Ashley have more than 60 years of combined experience in the industry, and having worked in more than 15 countries, they bring a deep understanding of how to communicate across cultures. And living and raising their family on the Sunshine Coast, they have a good understanding of the local community views and needs.

Assoc. Prof. Lynda Crowley-Cyr

Lawyer and Associate Professor, School of Law and Justice, Univ. Southern Queensland

 

Lynda has over 25 years' experience teaching and researching law at universities in Australia. She has taught law and non-law students, including health care professionals, education and business students, and supervises PhD students. Her research focuses on a range of health law topics including beach safety, workplace health and safety, mental health and wellbeing, negligence, and public authority liability. She has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences, and has a range of high ranking peer-reviewed publications, including two articles on the effectiveness of jellyfish warning signs.

Dale Mengel

Local Government and Risk Assessment Specialist

 

Dale worked as an environmental health officer for the Whitsunday Regional Council for ten years, before starting NQ Environmental Health Services, a specialised environmental health consultant and food safety auditor assisting businesses to remain compliant with legislation. Dale served as both a member and chair of the Whitsundays Marine Stinger Management Committee over its 10 year lifespan. Born and raised in the Whitsundays, Dale brings a wealth of local government and industry knowledge to our team.
